Black aluminium offset sliding doors and single internal door
The Reed Project in Gateshead centred around transforming a traditional living space into a more flexible, light-filled interior without compromising warmth or character. The brief was clear: create distinct zones within the home while maintaining openness, visual flow and a strong architectural presence.
To achieve this, we installed a bespoke set of black aluminium offset sliding doors, paired with a matching single internal door, all manufactured and finished to align seamlessly with the property’s interior palette.
Design intent and layout
The offset sliding doors were used to divide the main living and dining areas, allowing the homeowners to separate spaces when needed while still benefiting from uninterrupted sightlines and natural light. The offset configuration was key, enabling a wider clear opening and a more balanced appearance across the full span of the opening.
Slim aluminium profiles were chosen to deliver a refined, steel-look aesthetic without the bulk associated with traditional steel systems. The black powder-coated finish provides a strong contrast against the neutral walls and soft furnishings, anchoring the doors as a central design feature within the space.
Alongside the sliding system, a single internal aluminium door was installed to maintain consistency across the ground floor. Matching sightlines, glazing bars and hardware ensure the door feels like a natural extension of the sliding installation rather than a standalone element.
Light, flow and everyday use
A key requirement for the Reed Project was maximising light while improving day-to-day functionality. Large glazed panels allow light to travel freely between rooms, while the ability to close off spaces offers privacy, acoustic separation and flexibility for modern living.
The sliding doors glide smoothly along a discreet track system, making them easy to operate despite their size. The single door provides a practical access point for everyday use, reducing the need to fully open the sliding panels while still maintaining visual continuity.
Materials and finish
All frames were manufactured from high-grade aluminium and finished in a durable black powder coat, chosen for its longevity, low maintenance requirements and timeless appearance. Toughened safety glass was specified throughout, ensuring the installation meets modern performance standards while remaining elegant and understated.
Precision detailing, including aligned glazing bars and consistent handle placement, was essential to achieving the clean, architectural finish seen throughout the project.

The completed installation delivers a calm, cohesive interior that feels both open and structured. The offset sliding doors create a striking yet subtle focal point, while the single internal door reinforces the overall design language of the home.
